Shintaro Wireless Media Center Keyboard. Back of box

Appearance and Impressions

For the price I honestly didn't expect too much. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this unit and it has quite a solid feel which you would normally expect on a higher priced unit.
Underneath the keyboard shows some thought was put into its design.  It is nice and contoured with large concaves for perfect lap resting, although a larger person may have difficulty with this.

Keyboard Layout and Usage

Layout and ergonomics are quite good with well thought out design.  Touchpad is nice and responsive and double and single tap is supported.  (the middle touchpad button is not a button).
On my initial research I thought the big round button on the top right was a power switch that one could use your Mainboards, 'Wake-On Keyboard'... I was wrong.  It is the Shintaro logo only.  Next to it is the 'battery low' LED indicator.

The keyboard keys are a dream to use, they really are that good.  They are a low profile key with a short throw.  The responsive feedback from a key depression is quite firm and solid.  The keyboard is super silent with little noise made from key tapping.  (I use a a Logitech ultra-flat keyboard with low profile keys and I can definitely say that the Logitech is far noisier when using it).

With the addition of the touchpad, the numeric keypad had to go somewhere so Shintaro have incorporated them into a 'Function' key feature around the right-hand keys.

On the far left we have the multimedia controls area complete with:

  • Scroll wheel (is not a scroll button)
  • Channel up/down
  • Replay/Skip
  • Play, Record, Pause and Stop
  • Rewind/Forward
  • Volume up/down and Mute

Above the media controls we have left and right mouse click buttons as an alternative to the touchpad buttons.  This gives the user a nice balanced feeling when using the touchpad and these buttons together.

The top middle has the MS Windows MCE buttons:

  • MCE hotkey
  • Close current window
  • Home
  • My TV
  • My Video
  • My Pictures
  • My Music
  • Live TV

In order to use My TV, My Video, My Picture, Live TV.  Users need to activate the MCE hotkey/function first.  (only for Windows MCE).  I am yet to attempt keyboard mapping under GNU/Linux.
